Foster Care: a place of refuge
Rhonda Barley, Director of  "A Place of
Refuge,"  will share insights how foster care
for young adults prepares them to become
productive citizens. The program is being
held at First Birmingham at 7 p.m., March 16.
Directions here.

Once most of these youth reach 18 years of
age, they are often no longer wards of the
state and are out on their own.  Thanks to the
help of many, this dream is a reality. There
are currently four young men ages 17 and 18
residing at A Place of Refuge in Southfield.

Come to discover how all of us can underpin
this life-changing work. Together we can form
a wider, stronger safety net for our most
vulnerable and invisible children in our metro
area. For more information or to be put on the
email list for Faith Communities Coalition on
Foster Care. Contact:
Rev. Kate Thoresen.

Volunteers to restore
homes in Cedar Rapids
The Flood of 2008 forever changed
Cedar Rapids. When the Cedar River
crested, it extended well beyond the
500-year flood plain covering more than
10 square miles of the city. Considerable
real estate was permanently destroyed.

The water overtook neighborhoods no
one ever dreamed would flood; it flowed
through nearly every downtown business
and most public buildings, displacing city
and county services. Progress continues
on rebuilding. Work now primarily is
focused on rebuilding residential and
commercial rental property.  Join us in
April for a return visit. Contact Mary
Lloyd: 313-247-0792 or
email to see how
your group can participate in this mission.

Support our Habitat
Blitz Build Project
Our Faith Blitz Build with Habitat for
Humanity® Detroit lets us continue to
build on our faith in obedience to our
Lord Jesus Christ. The Hands-on Mission
Work Group must raise $20,000 in
donations for materials and supplies.
Construction and hospitality volunteers
also are needed.

We request your prayers, support and
participation in the 2010 Faith Blitz Build.
Construction volunteers must be older
than 16 years of age. Hospitality
volunteers will serve snacks, beverages
and lunch.

This year’s Faith Blitz Build is in two
parts: June 14-19 to build the exterior
structure and July 6-10 for the interior.
With your support, we will build a home
for a first-time homeowner in the Morning-
side Community on Detroit’s east side.

We welcome your participation in this
worthy project. Please complete a
Statement of Intent by April 30, 2010.
That will let us coordinate participation
and keep Habitat informed of our
progress. Make your checks payable to
the Presbytery of Detroit with “ECO-
Habitat for Humanity" in the memo line.

The Hands-on Mission Work Group
sponsors Festivals of Health to
provide needed medical screening
and checkups for Detroit citizens,
many of whom are homeless or
without insurance.

During these six days, 12 locations
around the Presbytery will host the
Synod of the Covenant Mobile Health
unit. Each location for the health
festival will have two nurses on duty.
Volunteers will handle registration,
food, games and other activities.
Southfield Korean Presbyterian

Six mission groups
inbound to serve Detroit
Hands-on Mission Work Group invites
mission groups to Detroit to act on their
discipleship by serving the needy people
in our community.

This summer, our Presbytery will host six
groups from as close as Ann Arbor and
as far as North Carolina. Hands-On
Mission identified mission projects and
coordinates with local and incoming
groups for the fullest possible experience
in Detroit. Local Presbyterian churches
provided lodging, space for meal
preparation and showers.

For groups interested in coming to
Detroit, here are some guidelines: Adult
to youth ratio should be 1:4; groups are
welcomed year-round, especially during
summer months for group sized between
10 and 30 with the minimum age of 14.
DPSI coordination provides physical,
intellectual, spiritual, social,
intergenerational, multicultural and
collaborative interactions.

  Inbound Mission forms available
distributes informational materials to
guests. They also receive health kits,
prizes and have great fun.

New Hands-on Mission Initiative
Feed the hungry, plant a garden
We are at war in the United
States. A war against
hunger and we need YOUR
HELP to win this war.

This past November the
U.S. Department of
Agriculture released a
report indicating that 49
million Americans did not
have dependable access to
food.  Even more
staggering, 17 million
children in the United States don’t have adequate food. A big increase from 12
million children a year ago.

Garden Gatherers can help by donating excess vegetables from home and church
gardens to a meal provider such as Forgotten Harvest. The Garden Gatherers
program gives adults and youth hands-on mission experience within their church
family to serve the needs of the community. Complete instructions on how to do this
will be available soon.
