Volunteers are needed this Saturday to lay down
a new floor at the Barnabas Youth Opportunities
Center in Detroit (3530 Grand River, Detroit, MI
48208). The plan is to work from 9:00 AM to 3:00
PM.  Bring your own lunch.

The Barnabas Center is a mission that helps
provide youth with meaningful work and learning
opportunities. The emphasis is on mentoring in a
caring, sensitive, and supportive community.

"I expected the mission trip to be mostly
about work," said Tracy Cascio, from
Church of the Covenant, Macomb Township.

The surprise: "I never felt so much
camaraderie as I did with fellow members of
the team," she explains. "They are             
wonderful people who care about each
Hands-on Mission "work" isn't just about work
that is finished. Because the kitchen is not done, they eat at a
sister's home.

"There home is in a middle-class area," she said, "with nice
brick homes like you might see in Warren (Michigan)."

"It was a great experience to be among people who really care
and the families with a lot of spirit," she said.  This was Tracy's
first hands-on mission trip.

Tracy had the opportunity to talk with the homeowners whose
home was being  restored. "José and Fatima had moved to New
Orleans from El Salvador before Hurricane Katrina struck. The
were looking for a better life here in America."

When Katrina was elevated to a Category 5 hurricane, the
family evacuated to Texas. Their children will stay in school
there while their home is being finished.

Their house was underwater for three months after the storm.
As part of the restoration process, the home was reduced to the
structure in a mucking process that removed the walls, utilities,
furniture and appliances. This week, Tracy's  team worked on
installing floors and sanding.

"José worked right along side of us until it was time to leave for
his job." Tracy said. He and Fatima are living in the one room
